Dementia-friendly design

Research & Design

Hungary / Czech Republic / the Netherlands

At WeCare architecture we are working on creating dementia-friendly environments. We do research, work on studies, develop concepts and design tasks to create enabling environments for people with dementia. We are convinced that the knowledge we encountered in the Netherlands and Singapore we can implement in Hungary.

We provide a consultancy service to elderly homes and to private individuals: we visit the existing buildings and suggest dementia-friendly refurbrishment and renovation ideas to make the spaces dementia-friendly. The scale of the project and our participation varies based on the budget and the requested depth of changes. It can vary from a few hours site visit including a few suggestions to detailed interior design renovation plans. The following images show a few examples and our base principles:

Furthermore in 2020 Orsolya gave an online presentation about dementia-friendly environments for the Facebook page of the ‘Alzheimer Café Budapest 12. kerület’.

In 2019 we were granted with the Young Architects Networking program of KÉK which gave us the chance to visit our colleague in Prague, Anežka Příhodová who is an architect with experience in dementia-friendly environments in the Czech Republic. Together we visited different care homes and spoke with professionals in the Czech Republic and Hungary. Next to that we gave a presentation and organized a workshop about ‘Dementia-friendly environments’ at the conference ‘Prague Gerontology Days’. We also organized a lecture series in KÉK, the contemporary architecture centre in Budapest, of which our own presentation can be found underneath.
