This energy-efficient underground house is situated on a beautiful hill in Gödöllő, Hungary, offering a wide panoramic view of the city. To preserve the view of the hill from below, most of the building is embedded into the hillside, with only a wooden hut protruding.
This design creates an extremely energy-efficient home that takes advantage of the earth’s stable temperature. In a country with extreme temperature variations and abundant sunshine like Hungary, an underground house is particularly effective.
By fully opening the south-facing facade and placing a window next to the staircase to allow light to filter through, the interior receives plenty of daylight, making this relatively small house feel less like it’s underground. A fixed sunshade, designed to accommodate the high summer sun, protects against the summer heat while allowing the late autumn and winter sun to penetrate. The large front facade and terrace provide a comfortable transition from indoor to outdoor living.
